Craig Dhu: Or My Lodging By The Sea is a novel written by Edwin Waugh and published in 1870. The story is set in a small village on the coast of Scotland, where the protagonist, John Fleming, has come to stay at the Craig Dhu Inn. The inn is run by a kind and hospitable couple, Mr. and Mrs. Macpherson, and John quickly becomes friends with them.As John settles into his new surroundings, he becomes intrigued by the history and folklore of the area. He learns about the legend of the Selkies, mythical creatures who can transform from seals into humans, and becomes fascinated by the idea of meeting one.One day, John goes out for a walk along the beach and comes across a group of fishermen who have caught a seal. He is horrified by their cruelty and tries to intervene, but they ignore him. Suddenly, the seal transforms into a beautiful woman, and John realizes that she is a Selkie. The woman, named Mairi, is grateful to John for trying to save her and they strike up a friendship. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Mairi is bound to return to the sea and can only stay on land for a short time.As the story unfolds, John becomes more and more involved in the lives of the people in the village, including the Macphersons and their daughter, Flora. He also becomes more deeply connected to Mairi, and their relationship takes on a romantic dimension.Craig Dhu: Or My Lodging By The Sea is a charming and whimsical tale that blends folklore, romance, and adventure. It is a classic example of Victorian literature and is sure to delight readers of all ages. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
