The resolution of the Twenty-first Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the May Meeting of the Plenum of the Communist Patty pointed out that the development of the chemical industry. in which materials are subjected to aggressive media at high temperatures and pres sures, requires new materials with high corrosion resistance. New structural metals, alloys, and nonmetallic materials with fairly high resistance to corrosion have been developed and put into use in recent years in the Soviet Union. However, there are problems attendant on the industrial use of these new materials which have not been solved and which require futther study in industry, institutions of higher learning. and scientif ic research institute. This book contains investigations made by professors of physical chem istry and corrosion of chemical equipment, their assistants, and their re search associates. These investigations, which concern the theory of cor rosion and practical methods of protection against corrosion, have been made in recent years. The kinetics of electrode processes occurring on an active electrode in an aggreSSive medium is considered in the atticle entitled 'Corrosion of Iron in Nitric Acid Solutions Under Cathodic and Anodic Polarization.' Measurements of the electrode potential and the current density were sup plemented by measurements of the corrosion rate of the metal to elucidate these processes in greater detail.

While the great scientists of the past recognized a need for a multidisciplinary approach, today’s schools often treat math and science as subjects separate from the rest. This not only creates a disinterest among students, but also a potential learning gap once students reach college and then graduate into the workforce. University of Texas at Austin My friendship with Freeman Dyson goes back over a half century. My first contact with him goes back to the late 1950s, when I was at the Institute for Advanced Study, and then evolved when I was a consultant at General Atomics in La Jolla, California. Freeman was then trying to design a space ship — the Orion — which would be propelled by atomic bo...

The time is right, following Benoît Mandelbrot's death in 2010, to publish this landmark book about the life and work of this maverick math genius. This compact book celebrates the life and achievements of Benoît Mandelbrot with the ideas of fractals presented in a way that can be understood by the interested lay-person. Mathematics is largely avoided. Instead, Mandelbrot&#...
