In questo libro di divulgazione scientifica, attraverso dialoghi con un esperto di intelligenza artificiale, un fisiologo presenta i principi fondamentali dell’organismo. Per la prima volta l’organismo viene considerato come una comunità di 220 tipi di cellule egoiste. Tutte le cellule del corpo (e ce ne sono circa 50 trilioni) competono per le risorse comuni. Nessuna cellula 'vuole' lavorare per un’altra, perché questo richiede il dispendio della sua limitata energia. Tuttavia, i prodotti della vita di alcuni tipi di cellule si sono rivelati utili per altri. Anche le catene causali tra diversi tipi di cellule (ad esempio, neuroni e cellule muscolari, neuroni e cellule secretorie), grazie alle quali l’organismo sfugge ai predatori o si procura il cibo, sono utili all’organismo. L’evoluzione ha preservato solo quelle specie le cui cellule avevano la capacità di contrastare il 'dispotismo' del cervello e di ripristinare un metabolismo ottimale. Gli esseri umani sono sani finché i meccanismi biochimici e fisiologici a più livelli garantiscono un compromesso tra le cellule effettrici e il cervello, principale organizzatore della risposta comportamentale. Viene mostrato come le malattie dell’età a lento sviluppo siano associate a disturbi di questo compromesso.
