L’obiettivo di questo libro è quello di contribuire alla comprensione della costruzione sociale dell’infanzia brasiliana. In questo caso, presenta il trattamento riservato al tema dell’asilo nido nelle riviste pediatriche brasiliane. L’autore invita il lettore a integrare tre campi di conoscenza: la teoria dell’ideologia, la teoria del genere e gli studi sociali sull’infanzia. Secondo la nostra interpretazione, sebbene tutti gli articoli menzionino almeno il termine asilo nido, non tutti si occupano di educazione della prima infanzia. L’asilo nido è spesso utilizzato solo come luogo di ricerca. L’asilo nido è trattato, esplicitamente e implicitamente, come un luogo di rischio utilizzato per supplire all’assenza della madre, soprattutto per le famiglie a basso reddito. Questa interpretazione è solitamente associata alla percezione del rischio di malattia, mobilitando significati di gravità e negatività in relazione all’asilo nido. Nello studio presentato in questo libro, mancavano informazioni sulle reazioni dei bambini quando venivano utilizzate procedure invasive. Concludiamo che i discorsi prodotti e diffusi dalla pediatria contemporanea possono essere interpretati come sostegno a relazioni di dominio di genere e di età, cioè sono ideologici.
