Conosciuto come quero-quero, appartiene all’ordine dei Charadriiformes, che ha ampliato la sua distribuzione geografica in tutto il Brasile. Questo grazie al suo adattamento agli ambienti urbani e alle grandi distese di aree aperte coperte principalmente da erbe locali, ideali per l’alimentazione e la riproduzione. La crescita incontrollata della popolazione ha causato problemi, ad esempio negli aeroporti, a causa delle collisioni con gli aerei, che hanno portato all’adozione di misure per controllare il comportamento aggressivo della popolazione, soprattutto durante il periodo riproduttivo, quando attacca qualsiasi intruso che si avvicini ai suoi pulcini. Il comportamento sociale del quer-quero è caratterizzato da due fasi distinte. Durante il periodo non riproduttivo, si formano stormi di oltre 50 uccelli. Durante la stagione riproduttiva, tra settembre e marzo, gli uccelli si separano in gruppi di 3-4 esemplari. Riteniamo che questi esemplari possano essere rappresentati dalla coppia e dai subadulti della stagione riproduttiva precedente che contribuiscono alla difesa del territorio. L’elevata aggressività della specie e il basso numero di predatori possono contribuire alla crescita della popolazione.
