O fenómeno de dispersão limita muitas vezes o desempenho da ligação de comunicação por fibra ótica, o que faz com que os impulsos ópticos se alarguem à medida que viajam através da fibra. Estes impulsos alargados podem sobrepor-se uns aos outros na saída, dando origem a interferência intersimbólica (ISI). O fenómeno de dispersão é um grande obstáculo à obtenção de taxas de dados elevadas e ligações mais longas nos sistemas de comunicação por fibra ótica, pelo que a compensação da dispersão se tornou uma questão de grande importância. Um dos métodos para reduzir a ISI no sinal é a equalização do sinal recebido. Neste livro, investigou-se a equalização adaptativa para reduzir a ISI causada pela dispersão em ligações ópticas. São efectuadas simulações utilizando um equalizador eletrónico para monitorizar e suprimir a dispersão em ligações ópticas.
