Cette étude a examiné la manière dont les principes de relations publiques ont été mis en œuvre dans la communication de campagne électorale de l’Alliance démocratique (DA) lors des élections sud-africaines de 2014, en comparaison avec l’ANC, l’EFF et Agang. Elle a fait valoir que les relations publiques politiques devaient être stratégiques, et non se limiter à de la propagande ou à une simple manipulation de l’information , et qu’elles devaient gérer la communication entre les partis et le public. À partir d’une étude de cas comparative et d’une analyse de contenu portant sur 144 articles du Cape Times ainsi que sur le programme électoral de la DA, cette recherche a révélé que la communication de campagne était principalement réactive plutôt que proactive. La DA et l’ANC se sont davantage attachés à attaquer ou à contrer leurs adversaires qu’à promouvoir leurs propres enjeux politiques. La couverture médiatique a été dominée par des controverses telles que l’affaire Nkandla et l’échec de la fusion entre la DA et Agang, ce qui a nui à leur réputation et tendu les relations avec les électeurs. L’étude conclut que la communication politique devrait être plus stratégique, dialogique et bidirectionnelle afin de renforcer les relations, l’engagement du public et la participation démocratique.
