The book examines environmental stewardship and community relations in addressing toxic waste spills in Zambia’s mining regions, focusing on the Kafue River spill. It investigates conflict occurrences related to mining activities, assesses causes and impacts on communities and mining companies, identifies community engagement strategies for conflict resolution, and evaluates their effectiveness. The study employs Conflict Theory, Social Atavistic Conflict Theory, and Stakeholder Theory, using surveys from affected communities. Findings reveal that mining companies’ inadequate environmental practices and poor government oversight contribute to conflicts, causing health, livelihood, and ecological damage. Companies use dialogues and partnerships for community relations, but communities demand greater transparency, consultation, and remediation efforts. Recommendations include addressing conflict triggers, enhancing community awareness, improving relations strategies, reducing militarization, providing skills training, and fostering government cooperation for sustainable development.
