Gli anni ’80 sono stati un periodo di grande instabilità economica per il Benin. Il prodotto interno lordo è diminuito, c’è stato un deficit cronico nelle finanze pubbliche e una perdita di competitività.Nel 1989 il Paese ha avviato un aggiustamento strutturale per correggere gli squilibri interni ed esterni e rilanciare la crescita. Da allora, l’economia nazionale è tornata a crescere. Anche la svalutazione del franco CFA nel 1994 aveva lo scopo di rilanciare la competitività. Questo studio si propone quindi di esaminare 'gli effetti del commercio estero sulla crescita e sul benessere in Benin dal 1978 al 2003'.Dimostra che il commercio estero contribuisce positivamente alla crescita e al miglioramento delle condizioni di vita delle persone. È quindi importante migliorare le prestazioni del commercio estero per ottimizzare lo sviluppo economico e sociale.
