A década de 1980 foi um período de grande instabilidade económica para o Benim. O produto interno bruto diminuiu, verificou-se um défice crónico das finanças públicas e uma perda de competitividade.Em 1989, o país iniciou um processo de ajustamento estrutural para corrigir os desequilíbrios internos e externos e estimular o crescimento. Desde então, a economia nacional regressou ao crescimento. A desvalorização do franco CFA em 1994 tinha igualmente por objetivo aumentar a competitividade. O presente estudo tem por objetivo examinar 'os efeitos do comércio externo sobre o crescimento e o bem-estar no Benim de 1978 a 2003'.O estudo mostra que o comércio externo contribui positivamente para o crescimento e a melhoria das condições de vida das populações. Por conseguinte, é importante melhorar o desempenho do comércio externo a fim de otimizar o desenvolvimento económico e social.
