Sebbene la palma da foraggio sia adattata alla regione semiarida brasiliana, può essere influenzata dalle condizioni edafoclimatiche di questa regione. Lo scopo di questa ricerca è stato quello di valutare l’effetto di diversi tassi di irrigazione e livelli di salinità dell’acqua sulla coltivazione della specie messicana Elephant Ear. La ricerca è stata condotta in vasi all’aperto presso l’Università Federale di Campina Grande tra settembre 2017 e dicembre 2018. Il disegno sperimentale era a blocchi randomizzati in uno schema fattoriale 4 x 4, con 4 repliche. I fattori consistevano in quattro tassi di irrigazione (25, 50, 75 e 100 per cento) in funzione della capacità idrica totale del suolo e quattro livelli di conducibilità elettrica dell’acqua: 0,60, 3,00, 5,40 e 7,80 dS m-1 . Sono stati determinati l’evapotraspirazione di riferimento (ET0), l’evapotraspirazione effettiva (ETr) e il coefficiente colturale (kc). L’applicazione di tassi di irrigazione compresi tra 320,00 e 460,00 mm favorisce l’ETr della palma da foraggio e anche in condizioni saline la pianta mantiene la sua richiesta evapotraspirativa. Il kc variava tra 0,68 e 0,85. La produzione più elevata è stata ottenuta con una soglia di salinità di 2,23 e una falda freatica di 354 mm.
