I legumi o le colture di legumi sono i più importanti integratori alimentari nei Paesi asiatici. I legumi non solo sono ricchi di proteine, ma contengono anche vitamine e minerali, e sono popolarmente conosciuti come 'carne dei poveri'. Le colture di legumi, come il fagiano (Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc.) e l’arachide (Arachis hypogaea L.), sono state coltivate come colture pluviali nelle regioni aride e semi-aride, altamente soggette a temperature estreme, frequenti periodi di siccità, umidità relativa ed elevata velocità del vento. Gli studi condotti finora hanno indicato che il fagiano di monte è relativamente più tollerante alla siccità e alla salinità del suolo rispetto all’arachide e ad altre colture di legumi semi-aride. Ora si stanno accumulando prove del fatto che i geni reattivi allo stress espressi nelle specie tolleranti sono nuovi o possono avere diversi geni regolatori che partecipano al cross talk del segnale, per un’espressione efficiente. Per comprendere meglio i cambiamenti nell’espressione genica associati alla tolleranza alla siccità in due colture di legumi semi-aride, come l’ippogrifo e l’arachide, nella presente ricerca è stato intrapreso un approccio genomico comparativo sull’analisi dei tag di sequenza espressa (EST), il clonaggio e la caratterizzazione dei geni reattivi allo stress.
