The genesis of this book lies in a question that is at once simple and profoundly consequential: why does Nigeria, endowed with some of the most diverse and productive agricultural land in Africa, consistently fail to produce enough cereal to feed its people? The answer, as this book demonstrates, lies in the complex, interactive dynamics of an agricultural system simultaneously shaped by the caprices of a changing climate and the instabilities of deeply imperfect market dynamics that have played out across four decades of Nigerian economic and agricultural history. The empirical core of the book draws on data covering 1981 to 2020, a span long enough to identify structural relationships and trends, yet recent enough to be directly relevant to current policy debates. The analytical toolkit includes the full suite of modern time-series econometric methods: unit root and cointegration tests, Vector Autoregression and Vector Error Correction Modelling, Impulse Response Analysis with Cholesky decomposition, exponential growth modelling, and Box-Jenkins ARIMA forecasting.
