In der Vergangenheit wurde China immer als großer Exporteur und als Zielland für Outsourcing und ausländische Direktinvestitionen angesehen. Heutzutage ist China zwar die zweitgrößte Volkswirtschaft der Welt, hat aber durchaus die Macht, in anderen Ländern zu investieren, anstatt nur investiert zu werden. China unterhält seit dem 17. Jahrhundert intensive Handelsbeziehungen mit den Niederlanden. Der niederländisch-chinesische Handel besteht hauptsächlich aus dem Handel mit Aufgaben anstelle des traditionellen Handels mit Waren, wobei die Niederländer offenbar Produktions- und Montageaufgaben nach China ausgelagert haben, während China Vertriebs- und Handelsmanagementaktivitäten in die Niederlande ausgelagert hat. Diese Komplementarität wirft auch ein Licht auf die Motive für ausländische Direktinvestitionen: Welche relativen Ausstattungsmerkmale haben die Niederländer zu dieser Entscheidung bewogen, in den Niederlanden zu produzieren (d. h. eine internationale Niederlassung zu gründen), anstatt einfach zu kaufen (d. h. auszulagern)? In diesem Beitrag geht es darum, die Determinanten chinesischer Direktinvestitionen in den Niederlanden zu ermitteln, da chinesische Unternehmen mit dieser Standortentscheidung die Transaktionskosten senken können. Anhand der gefundenen Determinanten werden die Gründe für die Entscheidung 'make not buy' erläutert.
