Die Besorgnis und die Forderung nach einer angemessenen Behandlung von Abwässern, die bei den verschiedensten Prozessen im Rahmen anthropogener Aktivitäten anfallen, sind heutzutage nichts Neues und nehmen immer mehr zu. Zu den am häufigsten verwendeten chemischen Koagulationsmitteln gehören Aluminiumsulfat, Eisenchlorid, Aluminiumhydroxychlorid und Eisen(III)-sulfat. Diese im Primärprozess eingesetzten Koagulierungsmittel sind für die Entfernung von etwa 60 % der im Abwasser vorhandenen organischen Stoffe (SCHUCK, 2011), Mikroorganismen und anderen Substanzen verantwortlich. In den letzten Jahren wurde nach natürlichen Alternativen ohne die metallische Zusammensetzung der traditionellen Koagulierungsmittel gesucht, um organische Stoffe zu entfernen. Zu diesen Alternativen gehört das von Cruz (2004) beschriebene Tannin, ein natürliches Polymer, das zunehmend eingesetzt wird und aus dem Extrakt des schwarzen Flechtwerks (Acacia mearnsii) gewonnen wird. Die Verwendung dieser Koagulierungs-/Flockungsmittel hängt von den physikalischen Eigenschaften des jeweiligen Abwassers ab, die vor allem mit dem Feststoffgehalt zusammenhängen und sich aus der Menge des in der Kläranlage erzeugten Schlamms ergeben (LORA, 2002).
