Die Aubergine (Solanum melongena L.) ist eine wichtige Solanaceen-Gemüsepflanze in Indien. Insgesamt gibt es 75 Gattungen und über 2000 Arten mit einer Vielzahl morphologischer Merkmale der Aubergine, darunter Fruchtform, Farbe und Größe. Die Aubergine stammt ursprünglich vom indischen Subkontinent, wobei Indien wahrscheinlich das Ursprungszentrum ist. Sie hat eine Chromosomenzahl von 2n=24. Eine Charakterisierung allein auf der Grundlage phänotypischer Merkmale ist unzuverlässig, da diese durch Umweltbedingungen beeinflusst werden können. Daher sind biochemische Marker wie Isoenzyme, Proteinprofilierung und molekulare Marker wie RAPD, ISSR und SSR für die Charakterisierung von Genotypen und für phylogenetische Studien von großer Bedeutung. Diese biochemischen und molekularen Marker sind von großer Bedeutung und werden in den Bereichen Pflanzenbiotechnologie, Pflanzenzucht, Saatguterzeugung und Saatgutprüfungsprogramme eingesetzt.
