在西南联大前后九年的近万师生中， 申泮文先生是极罕见的经历了从长沙临大、湘黔滇旅行团到昆明联大全过程，并最后押运三校公物北返，为联大划上句号的一 位：他作为南开大学化学系青年教员，在1946 年 7 月联大复员时参加清华、北大、南开三校联合迁运委员会，被委派为三校第二批 300 吨公物北运任务的押运组主任押运员，历经一年艰险，于 1947 年 7 月结束押运任务，到北平交割清华、北大公物，回到天津，至此为西南联大画上旬号。 更为难得的是，他熬过动荡岁月，将丰富、详尽的原始文字和图像记录保存了下来。 本书由申泮文的女儿申红和助手车云霞共同编选，分为文版和图版两册；文版收入申先生撰写于不同时期的回忆联大生活、联大人的文字，以及所保存的与联大师友的通讯往来；图版收入申先生所保存的从南迁到北返的九年间的大量联大生活照片，以及后期与联大、联大人相关的照片，其中很多文件和图片是首次面世，极为珍贵。
