Las Cartas desde Cuba son obra de la escritora sueca Fredrika Bremer. Fueron dirigidas a su hermana menor Ághate, tristemente fallecida de tuberculosis antes que Fredrika regresara a Estocolmo. Fredrika llegó a La Habana el 31 de enero de 1851 y de inmediato escribió la primera carta. En ellas retrata, en forma de diario, sus viajes por la isla de Cuba, toma apuntes sobre la vegetación, hace consideraciones sobre la vida de los cubanos y la arquitectura cubana. En definitiva, todo lo que ve, experimenta y conoce de este rincón de las Antillas se traduce en una prosa inteligente, sincera y arriesgada.Se cree que Fredrika Bremer fue la primera que escribió sobre la música gospel y las canciones de los esclavos que había escuchado a lo largo de este viaje. Sus Cartas desde Cuba contienen, además, todo tipo de críticas a las terribles condiciones que sufrían los esclavos en la isla de Cuba:La situación de los esclavos en las plantaciones es aquí, generalmente, peor que en los Estados Unidos; viven peor, se alimentan peor, trabajan más duramente y carecen de toda enseñanza religiosa. Se les considera totalmente como ganado, y el comercio de esclavos con África se practica todavía, aunque en secreto.
