Carlotta Marchionni e stata considerata dai suoi contemporanei un’attrice brava sia nelle parti comiche sia in quelle tragiche, ma la sua vera bravura e stata quella di convincere i contemporanei che le grandi passioni le viveva soltanto sulla scena, mentre nella vita era una donna modesta e di costumi irreprensibili. Di lei ci sono rimaste, infatti, due definizioni opposte e apparentemente inconciliabili: la baronessa torinese Olimpia Savio la definisce, infatti, nel suo libro di Memorie 'casta musa', mentre Stendhal la descrive nel suo Viaggio in Italia come una 'jeune fille devoree de passions'. Anche se sono due definizioni cosi lontane l’una dall’altra, i documenti dell’epoca ci dimostrano che entrambi avevano ragione perché Carlotta e stata nel corso della sua vita sia una donna passionale sia un’attrice che ha cercato attraverso un comportamento irreprensibile di conquistarsi la stima di chi la circondava per superare il cliché dell’attrice vista e trattata come donna di facili costumi.
