Considerando che la relazione suolo-pianta è molto importante per comprendere lo sviluppo delle foreste piantate e di quelle naturali, lo scopo di questo studio è stato quello di quantificare la lettiera e il carbonio organico accumulati in una piantagione di Pinus elliotti Engelm (33 anni) e in una foresta mista ombrofila montana (FOMM) a Irati, PR. La Foresta Ombrofila Mista Montana ha rivelato un elevato potenziale di accumulo di lettiera e di fissazione del carbonio rispetto ad altre foreste tropicali, e lo stesso risultato è stato osservato nella piantagione di Pinus elliottii, raccomandando un monitoraggio periodico degli stock di biomassa e di carbonio accumulati in queste formazioni forestali.
