本书是由伊丽莎白的大儿媳伊娃M布鲁斯特1950-1954年,通过伊丽莎白的工作日记,伊丽莎白1951年返回美国后,婆媳的共同的回忆,记录下来的手稿编撰而成。2018年经伊丽莎白的孙女芭芭拉•布鲁斯特•沃德的多方努力下,正式出版印刷。本书详细记录了美国女传教士,伊丽莎白•费舍尔•布鲁斯特,自1884年前往中国福州至1951年返回美国,在中国67年多的生活经历。她22岁受卫理公会美以美差会派遣来华的传教士,1884年来到中国福州,在那工作6年,学会讲福州方言。1890年嫁给蒲鲁士牧师。夫妇俩在兴化府(今莆田)建立了总部,他们是最早驻扎此地外国传教士。他们建立的基督教社区有200多个教堂,至1950年有四万余信众。他们的七个孩子,都出生于福建莆田,能讲一口流利的莆田话。她从一个人们眼中快乐、活泼的’星小姐’,成长为’蒲星氏’,’蒲师母’、’万孤母’,’牧羊人’,’匪之友’。她用自己的’天堂大脚’向缠足和禁锢妇女自由的习俗挑战;为女孩子创造接受与男孩子同样多的教育机会,创办’华南女子学院’,咸益女子初、高中学,以及乡村女子走读学校;她创办善育堂孤儿院,将那里的孩子视为己出,并为麻风病人建造教堂;她用莆仙语兴化方言罗马拼音;撰写了许多宗教和学校教材,并担任《奋兴报》主笔;她帮助改进农耕模式,在东南亚婆罗洲建立兴化移民村,为贫苦农民提供新的生活。她和丈夫始终坚信:他们的努力不仅限于传播福音,物质也是神圣的,’基督通过行为可见’,通过物质生活的实际改变彰显耶稣基督的精神。 伊丽莎白在中国经历了三个朝代,清朝末期的四个皇帝,民主共和,共产共和;经历了多次的战争和革命,面对屠杀,动乱、战争、疾病、天灾、人祸、政权更迭,很多传教士选择离开,她始终如一,坚守着她的理想和信仰,不断适应环境变化,继续完成神摆在她面前的日常工作,直到89岁时返回美国。
