Die biologische Abfallbehandlung hat sich mit über 600 Kompostierungs- und etwa 40 Vergärungsanlagen in der Bundesrepublik zu einem zentralen Faktor der Kreislaufwirtschaft entwickelt. Im Prinzip entspricht diese Kompostierung und Vergärung einer Intensivierung und kontrollierten Nutzung natürlicher Stoffkreisläufe. Dabei greifen biologische und technische Prozesse komplex ineinander. Die Hauptakteure sind Mikroorganismen, die organische Substanzen enzymatisch abbauen. Die ersten Kapitel der vorliegenden Studie geben einen Überblick über die für den Abbau biogener Substanzen wichtigsten mikrobiologischen Stoffwechselwege, weitere Beiträge stellen einige im Einsatz befindliche Anlagen und die etablierten Verfahrensprinizipien vor. Danach werden Methoden zur Prozeßführung und -charakterisierung, also zur Überprüfung der Effizienz laufender Kompostier- und Vergärungsvorgänge erläutert.
