A utilização excessiva de agro-químicos ao longo de várias décadas afectou negativamente a fertilidade dos solos, a produtividade das culturas, a qualidade dos produtos e, sobretudo, o ambiente. O teor de carbono orgânico do solo na maior parte dos solos indianos foi reduzido para mais de 0,5 por cento. Nestas circunstâncias, a manutenção da fertilidade do solo e a produtividade das culturas são os principais condicionalismos da agricultura. Atualmente, um grande número de macro e micro nutrientes está também a tornar-se deficiente na maior parte dos solos cultivados. Depois de trabalharmos de perto com sistemas de agricultura biológica durante mais de uma década, somos da opinião de que os 'bio-intensificadores' podem ser uma ferramenta barata e alternativa para resolver muitos problemas na produção biológica de culturas hortícolas. São uma fonte rica de carga microbiana benéfica, macro e micronutrientes e substâncias promotoras do crescimento das plantas. Em geral, são utilizados para tratar sementes/plântulas, melhorar a decomposição de materiais orgânicos e melhorar a saúde do solo e das plantas.
