Küstengebiete und ihre Ökosysteme sind häufig mit Problemen der Verschmutzung oder Zerstörung konfrontiert, die größtenteils auf menschliche Einflüsse durch Urbanisierung und Industrialisierung zurückzuführen sind. Ghanas Küstengebiet - in dem etwa 25 % der Landesbevölkerung leben - ist keine Ausnahme von dem wachsenden Einfluss menschlicher Aktivitäten, die zur Verschlechterung seiner Ökosysteme geführt haben. Dieses Buch konzentriert sich auf eines dieser Ökosysteme, die Lagunen. In einigen Lagunen Ghanas wurden sowohl in der Regen- als auch in der Trockenzeit Wasserqualitätsbewertungen durchgeführt, um festzustellen, ob sie für die Unterstützung des Wasserlebens geeignet sind und welchen Einfluss die Saisonalität auf ihre Qualität hat. In allen Lagunen wurden zahlreiche für die Studie relevante Parameter gemessen, wobei die meisten Höchstwerte in der Regenzeit verzeichnet wurden, mit Ausnahme von Sulfat, Temperatur, gelöstem Sauerstoff, Sauerstoffreduktionspotenzial und pH-Wert, die in der Trockenzeit die höchsten Werte aufwiesen. Auf der Grundlage der gemessenen Parameterwerte wurden auch Wasserqualitätsindizes für die Lagunen entwickelt, um festzustellen, ob sie international anerkannten Standards entsprechen oder nicht.
