Bakterielle Impfstoffe sind eine sichere Methode zur Vorbeugung gefährlicher bakterieller Erkrankungen, deren Behandlung nach einer Infektion sehr schwierig ist. Durch die Entnahme von Stämmen einer bestimmten bakteriellen Erkrankung, deren Abschwächung und Injektion in den Körper gelangt ein abgeschwächtes Antigen in den Körper, woraufhin das Immunsystem mit der Bildung von Antikörpern gegen dieses Antigen reagiert. Die Gedächtniszellen des Immunsystems speichern dann Informationen über dieses Antigen. Wenn der Körper dann diesem Antigen ausgesetzt wird, jedoch mit voller Virulenz, bildet sich eine Immunität gegen diesen Erreger, sodass keine Infektion entstehen kann. Auf diese Weise verhindern wir eine Krankheit auf sichere Weise, da die injizierten Stämme virulent sind und keine Infektion verursachen können.
