Los lieder ocupan un lugar de importancia relativa en la obra de W. A. Mozart: 32 composiciones para canto y piano que merecen la designación de lieder, amén de algunas obras que, debido a su concepción más amplia se asemejan al aria o al 'arietta'. Además de estos lieder propiamente dichos hay en las óperas del maestro, sobre todo en sus 'singspiele' con texto alemán, partes que testimonian claramente su descendencia del lied, pero que sin embargo no pertenecen al género de la canción de cámara en el sentido estricto del término.La composición de lieder se extiende desde 1768 -cuando el niño prodigio contaba 12 años- hasta 1791, año de la muerte prematura del maestro. En las obras juveniles Mozart enlaza con la técnica barroca del bajo continuo. Las melodías de corte sencillisimo son acompañadas por un bajo instrumental en función de mero apoyo armónico; la realización del bajo quedó librada a la improvisación del ejecutante (Nos. 1-7 de este tomo). Progresivamente amplia la forma, enriquece el acompañamiento y logra hacer más intensa la interpretación musical de los textos -las más de las veces de escaso valor literario- hasta llegar a obras que pueden considerarse como precursoras inmediatas de las formas cumbres del lied en la época romántica (p. e. Nos. 19, 23, 24 y 25).En el presente tomo los lieder se encuentran ordenados cronológicamente de acuerdo con la 2a edición del Catalogo Kochel. Los números puestos entre paréntesis en algunas obras se refieren a la 3' edición de dicho· Catalogo revisado por A. Einstein. En la parte principal del tomo figuran los lieder originales para canto y piano, con excepción de dos canciones masónicas (K. 483 y 484) que generalmente aparecen en las colecciones de lieder pero que, sin embargo -debido a algunos pasajes corales- no pertenecen al género del lied propiamente dicho. En el Apéndice se publican algunas obras preferidas del repertorio de los cantantes. Son ellas: Aria para canto y piano original (Nº 1 del apéndice). Tercetos con orquesta, reducida para piano (Nos. 4 y 5).Lied con mandolina, en su versión original y su transcripción para piano (Nº 2). Arias para canto y orquesta, reducida para piano (Nos. -3 y 6). Cantata para canto y piano original (Nº 7).Las indicaciones de tiempo puestas entre paréntesis fueron agregadas por el revisor. Las indicaciones referentes al tiempo y a la expresión que anotara Mozart en idioma alemán han sido traducidas mientras que las que figuran en sus manuscritos en terminos italianos han conservado su forma original. 4
