L’Averrhoa carambola L., appartenente alla famiglia delle Oxalidaceae, è comunemente nota come 'frutto a stella' o 'kamrakh'. Presenta vari usi medicinali, tra cui proprietà antipruriginose, antipiretiche, antielmintiche, antinfiammatorie, antiulcerose, antimicrobiche ecc. Negli ultimi decenni sono stati pubblicati numerosi articoli su riviste scientifiche di ampio rilievo che ne descrivono le proprietà nutrizionali e medicinali. La letteratura disponibile su questa pianta rivela che essa contiene numerosi fitocostituenti, tra cui tannini, terpenoidi, saponine, flavonoidi ecc., alcuni dei quali si sono dimostrati farmacologicamente significativi dal punto di vista medico. Tuttavia, non sono ancora stati riportati studi HPTLC sull’Averrhoa carambola.
