Resumo O presente estudo foi realizado em Barkachha, distrito de Mirzapur, situado entre 25000′ e 25015′ de latitude norte e 820 45′ de longitude leste. A fazenda está situada a uma altitude de 180,59 m acima do nível médio do mar. Barkachha, parte do planalto central de Vindhyan, é uma terra rochosa e ondulada, com muitos pequenos riachos e canais que drenam rapidamente as águas da chuva, juntamente com a fina crosta do solo fértil superior. Para superar essa situação, duas barragens de contenção foram construídas pelo Departamento de Irrigação de Uttar Pradesh, durante 2001. O presente estudo foi realizado para avaliar a capacidade de captação de água da chuva destes reservatórios para irrigação suplementar das culturas cultivadas, nomeadamente cereais, leguminosas e sementes oleaginosas. A água de escoamento acumulada desde julho permanece até fevereiro/março. O volume máximo de água da chuva captada em ambos os reservatórios foi durante o mês de setembro, com uma capacidade de 22 550 m³ e 121 170 m³ no reservatório n.º 1 e no reservatório n.º 2, respetivamente. Não houve água durante os meses de abril a junho em ambos os reservatórios. A área de produção agrícola sob esses reservatórios por meio de irrigação suplementar na última década variou de 17,5 a 26,1 ha.
