After introductory remarks on the significance of language, the develop ment of writing and the terminology of communications engineering, two examples - telegraph and telephony - are used to demonstrate that engin eering developments can be understood only in conjunction with progress in the natural sciences on the one hand and the development or recognition of a demand for new engineering solutions on the other.
