A língua desempenha um papel importante na compreensão dos problemas de matemática. A familiaridade ou a falta dela pode determinar o sucesso ou o fracasso na compreensão e na resolução de problemas de palavras. Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de conhecer a diferença no desempenho dos alunos do 4.º ano quando os problemas de matemática são apresentados em inglês e na língua materna (Hiligaynon). Foi utilizada no estudo a estatística descritiva-comparativa. Foi também utilizada uma conceção qualitativa. Os participantes foram divididos em dois grupos: um grupo fez o teste em língua inglesa e o outro grupo fez o teste em língua materna. Os resultados mostraram que não há diferença significativa quando os problemas de palavras são expressos na língua inglesa e na língua materna. No entanto, a média registada para os dois grupos foi inferior ao nível de proficiência, o que pode implicar que ambos os grupos tiveram dificuldade em resolver problemas de palavras, independentemente de os itens serem expressos em inglês ou na língua materna. Os resultados mostraram ainda que os alunos dos dois grupos foram capazes de responder a itens mais fáceis e que ambos os grupos encontraram.
