Samantha Rose, a junior lawyer at the prestigious Chicago law firm of Gouge, Driller, and Hammer, is struggling with both professional and personal challenges. After receiving a nasty letter from a client, she leaves work early, battling the bitter Chicago winter weather and memories of her failed relationship with Terry Steele, a charismatic senior partner at the firm. Through her reflections, we learn about their intense romance that ended badly when Terry chose a golf trip over their anniversary, and his subsequent attempts to force her out of the firm. Samantha’s background is also revealed, including details about her father, Captain Owen Rose, a decorated US Navy officer who died on a mysterious mission, leaving Samantha a significant inheritance that allowed her to purchase her luxury penthouse condo.Samantha’s luck takes an unexpected turn when she receives a mysterious courier envelope at her home, inviting her to meet with Clive Jonas, Vice President of Customer Relations at The Communal National Bank. Despite the terrible winter weather, she makes her way to the bank’s headquarters, where she meets not only Clive Jonas but also the surprisingly young and handsome bank president, Peter Hutton. To her shock, they announce that she has won the bank’s customer promotion - a 10-day all-expenses-paid first-class trip to Aruba. The prize includes luxury accommodations, spending money, and various pre-arranged activities. Samantha, still processing the news, begins to see this as a perfect escape from her stressful life and Chicago’s harsh winter.Eager to share this unexpected gift, Samantha decides to invite her best friend, Sophia Wright, to join her on the trip. .Samantha and Sophia spend an afternoon researching Aruba, creating an extensive list of activities and attractions they want to visit. They explore Facebook forums, read reviews, and watch videos about the island. While shopping for vacation clothes with Sophia, Samantha returns to her office to find Terry Steele waiting in an intoxicated state. His usually impeccable appearance is disheveled, and his behavior is erratic. The confrontation marks a significant shift in their dynamic, with Samantha maintaining her composure while Terry appears increasingly desperate. The chapter ends with Samantha receiving confirmation of their flight arrangements from Tracy Brown, along with a detailed list of vendors who will provide services as part of the prize package. Sophia advises Samantha to be cautious about Terry’s strange behavior. In a tense meeting in Samantha’s office, Terry Steele reveals his criminal activities. He confesses to embezzling client trust funds to invest in a suspicious Venezuelan development project, and worse, attempting to illegally access the trust accounts from Samantha’s father’s estate. He desperately asks Samantha to help cover his tracks by making the transfers appear legal. Samantha firmly refuses and orders him to leave. Following Sophia’s advice, Samantha meets with bank president Peter Hutton and FBI agent Fred Joyce regarding Terry Steele’s attempted fraud. They reveal that Terry is under investigation for multiple federal crimes and will be arrested while Samantha is away on vacation. Clive Jonas arranges for Henry, their trusted driver, to take Samantha and Sophia to the airport for their early morning flight. The vacation finally begins as Henry picks up Samantha and an exuberant Sophia for their early morning drive to O’Hare Airport. The chapter follows their journey through the First Class lounge, where they indulge in mimosas and gourmet breakfast while watching other travelers. On the plane, they review their detailed vacation plans, including their stay at the award-winning Bucuti and Tara resort.
