My love for the water of the sea, of river, bay and ocean, from childhood to now, its call is strong and I yearn to be close to the flow of tides. In Aquamarine, include poems on the tragedy of refugees who came to us by boat seeking refuge. There are poems about convicts and slaves, floods and climate change. It is a collection drawing on my wonder at the mystery of the deep, of myth and folklore and how, from our first cluster of cells, the ocean has shaped the human race. It is also a collection about my relationship with the shoreline, the healing, both physical and spiritual that water offers us.

This collection of poems is a homage to my grandfather, Demetrius (Jim) Fermanis and the island he called home but never returned to. I cannot vouch for all these stories. Some are a confection made of fragments I was told as a child, part of our family lore, some are my own imagining. There are impressions from my visit to the island in 2012 as I went in search of the culture m...

  • The Passage of Bees
    Michele Fermanis-Winward
This collection is a meditation on the garden that is my woodland sanctuary at the top of the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. Perched on the side of a ridge, it is sheltered by tall silver-top eucalypts with their rough grey bark. Each year, the number of insects, birds, reptiles and other animals declines, prey to loss of habitat and hard seasons. In the south. the place of...
