O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar a composição química do óleo essencial e dos extratos de Ptychotis verticillata. As atividades antioxidantes desta espécie também foram avaliadas para sugeri-la como uma nova fonte potencial de antioxidantes naturais. A análise da composição química do óleo essencial de P. verticillata do Marrocos foi realizada utilizando GC e GC-MS. O óleo era dominado por compostos fenólicos (48,0%), com carvacrol (44,6%) e timol (3,4%) como os principais compostos. Os fenólicos vegetais constituem um dos principais grupos de componentes que atuam como terminadores de radicais livres antioxidantes primários. As quantidades totais de fenólicos e flavonóides nos extratos solventes (éter dietílico e acetato de etilo) foram determinadas espectrometricamente. Além disso, as atividades antioxidantes do óleo essencial e dos extratos foram determinadas utilizando um sistema de teste DPPH. A atividade de eliminação de DPPH dos extratos aumentou na ordem acetato de etilo > ácido ascórbico > éter dietílico > óleo essencial. Foi observada uma relação entre o potencial de atividade antioxidante e os níveis totais de fenólicos e flavonóides do extrato.
