Les plantes médicinales ont été identifiées et utilisées tout au long de l’histoire de l’humanité. Les plantes produisent de nombreux composés chimiques qui ont des fonctions biologiques, notamment la défense contre les insectes, les champignons et les mammifères herbivores. Au moins 12 000 composés de ce type ont été isolés à ce jour, un nombre estimé à moins de 10 % du total. Les composés chimiques présents dans les plantes agissent sur le corps humain par des processus identiques à ceux déjà bien connus pour les composés chimiques des médicaments conventionnels ; les plantes médicinales ne diffèrent donc pas beaucoup des médicaments conventionnels en termes de fonctionnement. Cela leur confère des propriétés pharmacologiques bénéfiques, mais aussi le même potentiel que les médicaments pharmaceutiques conventionnels en termes d’effets secondaires nocifs.
