Wirusy paragrypy są ważną przyczyną chorób dróg oddechowych, w tym infekcji dolnych dróg oddechowych, które są główną przyczyną zgonów niemowląt i małych dzieci na całym świecie. Badanie to przeprowadzono w celu oceny niejasnych cech epidemiologicznych ludzkich wirusów paragrypy (HPIV) i ich roli w ostrych infekcjach dróg oddechowych (ARI) u dzieci w Iraku. W okresie od stycznia do marca 2015 r. pobrano 300 próbek z nosogardła od hospitalizowanych pacjentów pediatrycznych w AL-Muthanna w Iraku i przebadano je pod kątem obecności HPIV za pomocą odwrotnej transkrypcji w czasie rzeczywistym z łańcuchową reakcją polimerazy.
