Os desafios parentais na UCIN oferecem uma oportunidade para reduzir os riscos de maus-tratos infantis. O fornecimento de leite materno é considerado uma prevenção contra o abuso infantil, pois aborda os fatores de risco que colocam os bebés da UTI neonatal em perigo. Os profissionais da UTI neonatal têm a responsabilidade de mitigar os fatores de risco e abordar as barreiras ambientais ao apego. Os assistentes sociais têm um papel vital na liderança da prevenção do abuso infantil na UTI neonatal.
