Auf seinen Forschungsreisen gelangte er über Europa hinaus nach Lateinamerika, in die USA sowie nach Zentralasien und auch dort ist er heutzutage nicht unbekannt. Noch zu Lebzeiten wurde er als zweiter Wiederentdecker Amerikas gefeiert. In Kuba, dass er 1801 und 1804 besuchte, werden heute Schüler über ihn, seine Forschungen und deren Wirkung unterrichtet, so angesehen ist er dort. Doch das war nicht immer so. 1826 veröffentliche Humboldt ein Essay über die Insel Kuba, in der er nicht nur positives zu berichten hatte. Die kubanische Elite, sah ihn nunmehr nicht nur als prominenten Forscher an, sondern als jemanden, der ihrer Politik ernsthaft gefährlich werden konnte.
