A alelopatia é um fenômeno com diferentes interações que podem ser encontradas nas plantas, como forma de proteção contra o ataque de patógenos, insetos pragas e herbivoria. Os compostos do metabolismo secundário apresentam diferentes concentrações em diferentes partes dos tecidos vegetais, sendo originários da rota chiquimato ou acetado, em que mesmo se as plantas estejam mortas, seus tecidos possuem a capacidade de liberar substâncias aleloquímicas, tanto por volatilização, como por meio de lixiviação de substâncias de seus tecidos, as quais são solúveis a água da chuva ou orvalho, sendo as mesmas conduzidas ao solo, causando interferência nos microrganismos e plantas próximas. A ação dos aleloquímicos pode ocorrer de forma direta e indireta, sendo a ação direta consiste na intervenção do desenvolvimento e no metabolismo vegetal, incluindo modificações a nível celular, fitormonal, fotossintético e respiratório, prejudica a síntese de DNA e RNA, síntese de proteína ou inibi e estimula atividades enzimáticas especificas.
