Los agujeros negros son los objetos más oscuros y más brillantes del Universo. De su interior nada escapa, ni siquiera la luz, son completamente negros. Sin embargo el material interestelar que es atrapado por su campo gravitacional alcanza temperaturas y velocidades extremas, convirtiéndose así en fuentes incandescentes de luz tan poderosas que llegan a rivalizar con la luminosidad de una galaxia completa. Se conocen hasta ahora dos tipos de Agujeros Negros: aquellos que quedan luego de la muerte explosiva de una estrella masiva (al menos ocho veces más masiva que nuestro sol), y aquellos que viven en los centros de las galaxias, con masas desde cientos de miles hasta cientos de millones de veces la masa del sol. Este libro explora de manera simple pero rigurosa la naturaleza de los Agujeros Negros. Desde sus orígenes teóricos basados en la Teoría General de la Relatividad de Albert Einstein, hasta las observaciones queprueban la presencia de estos exóticos objetos en nuestra Galaxia y muchas otras galaxias del Universo.
