This book includes a collection of lectures and masterclass contributions by leading African scholars, among them the inaugural Ubuntu Annual Lecture by Professor Bagele Chilisa on relational ontologies and epistemologies. Several of these pieces focus on social development. They look at social work’s contribution to socio-economic development, human, social and economic capital development in Africa, and the sustainability of Africa through technological innovation and indigenous knowledge systems. Other contributions cover research grant writing, fieldwork education, social norms and the Tree of Life model. A special group of articles on older persons covers social justice, elder abuse, food security, residential care, and the role of pensions and cash transfers in sustainable livelihoods. Further articles address labour force participation and poverty in Cameroon, women's subsistence farming in Kenya, fatherhood, school bullying, child marriage, proverbs as African epistemology and Ubuntu ethics in research. The book will be useful to anyone seeking African-centred approaches to social work and social development.
