This book contains one of the most significant issues in the journal’s history: the 2020 special issue on Ubuntu social work. More than twenty articles show how Ubuntu, Botho and Hunhu can guide ethics, child welfare, family life, migration, peace building, health and social policy. One article presents the Ubuntu bowl as a route to social development in Africa. Other social development contributions cover the politics of development in rural Matabeleland, micro and small enterprises, vocational training for young people, the financial viability of women’s organisations, community peace committees, government-led social protection and the exclusion of children with disabilities from community development. Studies from Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana, Nigeria, Uganda, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe also cover domestic violence, displacement and refugees. A further group of articles records early African responses to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The book is a key resource for scholars, educators and practitioners working to decolonise social work and social development.
