This book brings together the first issues published after the African Journal of Social Work was revived in 2013, following a long gap after its first two volumes in 1999 and 2000. The articles show African social work and social development scholarship beginning to rebuild and set its own direction. They cover social protection for older people, child-headed households, child sexual abuse, the extended family as a safety net for vulnerable children, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis services, housing, and school social work. On social development, contributors examine the role of international organisations in grassroots development, communication in community development projects, education for development, rural participation in economic policy and an African business model. Writers from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Uganda and South Sudan also discuss human rights and spirituality in practice. The book includes the early paper on Ubuntu and social work that shaped much of the journal's later direction and the direction of social work in Africa. It will be useful to students, educators, researchers and practitioners.
