In allen späteren Epochen, wie beispielsweise dem Mittelalter, der Renaissance oder der Zeit der Aufklärung war der Bildungsbegriff einem stetigen Bedeutungswechsel unterworfen. Geschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Ereignisse sowie Veränderungen waren und sind auch heute noch prägend für den Begriff der Bildung. In unserem alltäglichen Leben begegnet uns das Wort Bildung des Öfteren, sei es als Begriff, als Anspruch oder auch als Versprechen. Wer kennt in Deutschland nicht die Sendung Wer wird Millionär?, in der uns der Moderator Günther Jauch verspricht, mit Allgemeinbildung sogar zum Millionär zu werden? Mit Bildung muss man sich also beschäftigen, besser noch, man muss sie haben. Aber was ist Bildung nun eigentlich, bzw. wer darf sich gebildet nennen und wer nicht? Berechtigt Bildung heutzutage nur noch zu etwas oder kann sie zu etwas befähigen? Ist Lernen in Bildungsinstitutionen lediglich am ökonomischen Bedarf orientiert? Und werden Bildungsinhalte nicht nur noch unter den Perspektiven des Bildungsmarktes bedeutsam? Im Zuge der Kommerzialisierung und Liberalisierung des Bildungssektors durch die Nivellierung von Hochschulabschlüssen, der flächendeckenden Einführung von Studiengebühren in fast ganz Europa und den Privatisierungsbemühungen der Welthandelsorganisation (WTO) etc., wird Bildung immer mehr zur Ware und damit zu einem profitablen Gut.
