Adonis Attis Osiris: Studies in the History of Oriental Religion is a book written by James George Frazer, a Scottish anthropologist and folklorist. The book is a compilation of Frazer’s research on the religious beliefs and practices of ancient civilizations in the Near East, including Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The book is divided into three parts, each dedicated to the study of a different deity: Adonis, Attis, and Osiris. Adonis was a god of vegetation and fertility, Attis was a Phrygian god associated with the harvest, and Osiris was an Egyptian god of the afterlife. Frazer examines the myths, rituals, and symbolism associated with each deity, as well as their influence on the cultures that worshipped them. Frazer’s research is based on a comparative approach, which involves analyzing similarities and differences between different cultures and religions. He draws on a wide range of sources, including ancient texts, archaeological evidence, and ethnographic studies. Adonis Attis Osiris: Studies in the History of Oriental Religion is considered a seminal work in the field of comparative religion. It has had a significant impact on the study of ancient religions and mythology, as well as on the development of modern anthropology and cultural studies. The book is written in a scholarly style and is intended for academic readers interested in the history of religion and culture.1906. In two volumes bound as one. Part IV of The Golden Bough, A Study in Magic and Religion. These studies are an expansion of the corresponding sections in Sir Frazer’s book, The Golden Bough, and they will form a part of the third edition of that book. In studying afresh these three Oriental worships, he paid more attention than formerly to the natural features of the countries in which they arose, because he is more than ever persuaded that religion, like all other institutions, has been profoundly influenced by physical environment, and cannot be understood without some appreciation of those aspects of external nature which stamp themselves indelibly on the thoughts, the habits, the whole life of a people. Illustrated. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
