A differenza delle tecniche per aumentare il pH del suolo, esistono poche alternative agronomiche per ridurre il pH dei terreni alcalinizzati al fine di renderli produttivi. L’irrigazione con acqua ricca di carbonati di calcio alcalinizza i suoli della regione semiarida brasiliana, in quanto il pH sale al di sopra dell’intervallo ideale per la coltivazione (5,7-6,5) e questo riduce drasticamente la disponibilità di nutrienti come P, Fe, Mn, Zn, S, B e Cu. Lo scopo di questo studio è stato quello di valutare l’efficacia di dosi di zolfo elementare (S°) e di letame bovino nel correggere il pH di terreni alcalinizzati nel nord di Minas Gerais. Le dosi testate sono state 0; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0 e 4,0 t/ha di S° combinate con 0, 10, 15, 25 e 50 t/ha di letame bovino utilizzando la matrice sperimentale a doppio quadrato, e le caratteristiche valutate sono state l’acidità attiva (pH in acqua), l’acidità totale (H+Al), la conducibilità elettrica, il Ca2+, il Mg2+ a diverse date.
