知青大返城发生在上山下乡运动的后期， 人们都把大返城视为上山下乡运动的组成部分。本书以社会运动学视角， 从理论上论证两个运动的迥异性质， 并辅以隐类别分析法， 从实践上证明两个运动分属不同类别。知青大返城是中共建政以来， 中国民众唯一获得成功的、自发的社会运动。根据笔者进行的问卷调查， 本书对知青下乡动员时的心情、安置流向和形式、下乡期间的劳动、收入、心态、婚恋、与农民关系、以及返城时间和方式、最终职业、子女发展、目前生活、对上山下乡运动和经历的评价等诸多问题进行分析研究。涉及面之广， 参与人数之多， 至今罕见。本书总结了知青大返城运动的经验教训:（ 1） 政治机会稍纵即逝， 需要运动组织者有敏锐的政治嗅觉;（ 2） 运动组织的重要性;（ 3） 运动的成员必须宽容不同意见， 避免分裂;（ 4） 运动需要选择有利的战术， 绝食并非有效， 而罢工和卧轨较为有效。这些经验将为中国未来的社会运动提供借鉴。
