A Son of Satsuma: Or With Perry in Japan is a historical fiction novel written by Kirk Munroe in 1901. The story is set in Japan during the mid-19th century when the country was undergoing a transformation from a feudal to a modern society. The novel follows the journey of a young Japanese boy named Kano, who is a samurai from the Satsuma province, as he becomes involved in the events leading up to the arrival of Commodore Perry and the opening of Japan to the outside world.Kano is torn between his loyalty to his feudal lord and his desire to learn about the world beyond Japan. When Perry arrives with his fleet, Kano is chosen to be one of the interpreters for the negotiations with the Americans. Through his interactions with Perry and the other Americans, Kano learns about their customs and technology, which inspires him to become an advocate for modernization in Japan. The novel also explores the political and social changes taking place in Japan during this time, including the conflict between the traditional samurai class and the emerging merchant class. Kano’s journey reflects the larger struggles of his country as it navigates its way into the modern era.Overall, A Son of Satsuma is a captivating tale of adventure, cultural exchange, and the challenges of change in a rapidly evolving society. It offers a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in Japanese history and the impact of Western influence on traditional Japanese culture. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
