A Costa do Marfim é um dos oito países membros da União Económica e Monetária da África Ocidental (UEMOA). Antiga colónia francesa, foi governada por Félix Houphouët-Boigny entre 1960 e 1993. Após mais de um século de coexistência pacífica entre estrangeiros e autóctones, a Costa do Marfim vive agora uma experiência de xenofobia, em particular por ocasião das eleições presidenciais. Esta obra explica como a ivoirité se tornou uma ideologia dominante na Costa do Marfim. Os políticos transformaram, entretanto, a sua visão da ivoirité política numa ivoirité cultural. Com base nesta ivoirité cultural, a Costa do Marfim inicia um percurso - embora ainda haja dificuldades - rumo à sua concretização, ou seja, a convivência que se torna o alicerce da grande nação marfinense.
