Hoje, a matemática não é vista como um conjunto de conceitos abstratos e habilidades que precisam ser aprendidos, como no passado, mas como a informação que surge no processo de resolução e interpretação de problemas com base na modelagem da realidade e, novamente, as habilidades que se desenvolvem nesse processo. De acordo com esse entendimento, o objetivo do ensino da matemática passou a ser proporcionar aptidão matemática e formar a habilidade de usar a matemática de maneira conveniente nas condições necessárias. O número de estudos sobre o conceito de utilização da matemática no ensino superior é muito reduzido. Partindo disso, no presente estudo, procurou-se observar como os alunos do departamento de matemática da faculdade de ciências e letras utilizam a matemática pura que aprendem nas condições da vida real, estudando em conjunto com eles. Além disso, no âmbito do estudo, foi feita uma avaliação das competências na utilização da matemática, considerando-as em conjunto com as variáveis nível da turma, género e desempenho académico.
