A Baffling Quest is a mystery novel written by Richard Dowling and first published in 1891. The story follows the investigation of a murder that takes place in the wealthy neighborhood of Belgravia in London. The victim is a wealthy businessman named Mr. John Marwood, who is found dead in his study with a gunshot wound to the head. The police are baffled by the case, as there are no signs of forced entry or robbery, and the only clue is a mysterious letter found in the victim’s pocket. The investigation is led by Detective Inspector Chippenfield, who is assisted by his colleague, Detective Sergeant Long. As they delve deeper into the case, they uncover a web of deceit and betrayal, with a number of suspects who all have motives for wanting Mr. Marwood dead. These include his business partner, his estranged wife, his secretary, and a number of other individuals with whom he had dealings. As the investigation progresses, the detectives encounter a number of obstacles and setbacks, including false leads and red herrings. However, they persist in their quest for the truth, and eventually uncover the identity of the killer in a dramatic and unexpected climax.A Baffling Quest is a classic example of a Victorian-era mystery novel, with a complex plot, a range of intriguing characters, and a strong sense of atmosphere and setting. It is a must-read for fans of the genre, and a fascinating glimpse into the world of crime and detection in late 19th century England. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
